Is it worth getting a fuel powered chainsaw?
That depends on what you plan to use it for. If you need to cut wooden logs regularly, say for example to fuel a wood burner, then a petrol powered saw will make the job or cutting wood quick and easy. There isn’t a trailing power lead to worry about which means your saw is portable around your garden or workshop. Something to consider though is the maintenance that a chainsaw will need. Regular maintenance tasks include:
- Engine servicing
- Refilling the tank with fresh petrol
- Keeping the cutting teeth on the blade sharp
- Tensioning the chain correctly
If this is your first fuel powered saw, don’t be put off by the maintenance tasks. Fortunately, the manufacturers do a good job of detailing the maintenance required over the lifetime of the saw. Your local gardening tool shop will be able to help with maintenance if you’re not keen on the DIY approach.
Something else to consider is the weight of the saw when held. Petrol saws are much heavier than their electric counterparts so consider the weight of the saw before you buy and see if it’s a weight that you can comfortably handle.
How fuel powered chainsaws work
An internal combustion engine drives a metal chain of sharp cutting teeth at very high speed which provides an efficient cutting capability. The cutting chain revolves around a guide bar which is oblong shaped. The lengths of these guide bars can vary between models and is something to consider when buying.
The engine of a saw will require regular maintenance to keep it in top condition, as will the cutting teeth of the chain.
